Enabling Others. My Dad’s True Story.

Posted on 09 March 2010 by Shane Mac

Here is a true story.

I play music. I play all over the place. I now play with my brother as the ‘Son’s of Theo.’ We are the house band at McGilvra’s in Seattle on many Saturday’s. I also play a lot of weddings and corporate events. I was fortunate to get sponsored by miller lite when I was in the midwest. Humbled to say the least. That is not what this is about. This is about my dad.

Why?

Because my dad has musical talent in his blood and he passed it along. (although I am not the best at guitar or singing and I just do it).

He played the French horn when he was younger and he always had rhythm. He was a dang good whistler. Always in tune. He said he would love to play the Bass guitar. That was all he needed to say.

Last Christmas, myself and 2 others, Loni and Max, decided to change that. Loni and I went to Guitar Center and got him a bass guitar while my brother and I bought him guitar lesson’s for 6 months.

Outcome

I walk into my Dad’s house a few months back and I hear this awesome bass line in the background. It sounded like a freaking recording. I grabbed my guitar, learned the chords, made up the words, and recorded it in about 5 minutes.

Ladies and gentleman, I give you a piece of “Black Magic Woman,” performed by Shane Mac and my dad, Theo!

Enable Others

Stop letting people talk about stuff and actually enable them to do it. Help them tackle the fear of just starting. Eliminate all the cant’s, no’s, and wont’s before you even tell them to do it. The thank you that you will get will be worth it all and you will help yourself get over your own fears.

Next time someone says, “I would love to do that,” figure out exactly how you can get them to do it and do it. Now. Right now.

You really can do whatever you set your mind to as long as you have the support of others cheering you on and the dedication to stay focused on it long enough. Start doing. Stop talking. NOW. This is the perfect example that it is never to late to start. EVER.

Love ya Dad.

(The picture is from about 6 years ago of my brother, dad, and me. Before Dad ever touched a guitar. Now he is part of the band.)

  • Hey Shane,

I love how your posts get right to the point, and, damn, do you know how to make a girl tear up, too. When people talk about "enabling" others, it's usually in a negative way--like you're enabling them not to help themselves, etc. I like your use of the word much better.

This post and the idea of not just supporting a friend but actively helping them achieve their goals really struck home with me Thursday night when I met up with a friend (yep, wrote about @lamiki: http://lamiki.com/2010/03/12/hey-long-lost-frie...).

Question, who has enabled you in the past? Curious...
  • Hey Shane. Great post - both you and your dad sound like stand-up guys.
  • Thanks mike. How are you doing?
  • Good stuff Shane. It's amazing how enabling others to do something can have such an impact. I've been thinking of starting a mentoring program for bloggers on skool of life because somebody had emailed me a while back asking if I'd mentor them. Cool story.
  • Thanks man and thanks for the interview the other day. Keep kicking ass!
  • I think it is so important to surround yourself with people who are good for your soul and challenge you and push you to be a better person. Even if it is not easy at first. Thanks for sharing this and for always finding a way in all that you do to enable others to be better.
  • Thanks Alex. Anything I can help you with? You are in school right? I would love to come speak.
  • Yeah, I just got into a PhD program. Everyone in my program has a very specialized focus in my program and usually we have careers lined up after school. For most of my grad school cohort, we're in school doing what we love so we can do what we love for a career. I love reading your blog because you have a great perspective on what a career should (and shouldn't) be and how people can live more fulfilling lives. I'm sure the undergrads would benefit so much from your blog and from a visit from you, but I wouldn't know the first thing about getting you in touch with them. :) If I think of an opportunity when you could come speak, I will let you know. :D Keep rocking our faces off!
  • Thank you
  • Having the right people in your corner is the by far the most important thing to help you towards reaching your dreams. Look like you have all that in your fam!

You gotta link out your YouTube channel..if u got more Santana and maybe some Clapton you're my new preferred guitarist!
  • One of my favorite songs to play is Eric Clapton "Tear's in Heaven!" Live show coming!

    Thanks man!
  • Hey Shane good stuff man! I got my Martin Acoustic D16 guitar you've just inspired me to pick up again! Thank goodness your dad is alive! I thought I was gonna read something happened. Cheers, Sam
  • Come to Seattle and let's play a show! Thanks man.
