Hey Shane,

I love how your posts get right to the point, and, damn, do you know how to make a girl tear up, too. When people talk about “enabling” others, it's usually in a negative way–like you're enabling them not to help themselves, etc. I like your use of the word much better.

This post and the idea of not just supporting a friend but actively helping them achieve their goals really struck home with me Thursday night when I met up with a friend (yep, wrote about @lamiki: http://lamiki.com/2010/03/12/hey-long-lost-frie...).

Question, who has enabled you in the past? Curious…

Good stuff Shane. It's amazing how enabling others to do something can have such an impact. I've been thinking of starting a mentoring program for bloggers on skool of life because somebody had emailed me a while back asking if I'd mentor them. Cool story.

Yeah, I just got into a PhD program. Everyone in my program has a very specialized focus in my program and usually we have careers lined up after school. For most of my grad school cohort, we're in school doing what we love so we can do what we love for a career. I love reading your blog because you have a great perspective on what a career should (and shouldn't) be and how people can live more fulfilling lives. I'm sure the undergrads would benefit so much from your blog and from a visit from you, but I wouldn't know the first thing about getting you in touch with them. If I think of an opportunity when you could come speak, I will let you know. Keep rocking our faces off!

I think it is so important to surround yourself with people who are good for your soul and challenge you and push you to be a better person. Even if it is not easy at first. Thanks for sharing this and for always finding a way in all that you do to enable others to be better.
