This is a guest post by a friend of mine, Adam Haun, who recently out of school found himself unemployed and looking for a new way to get hired. I showed him my latest product and this is his story about using Hello There to get hired. He’s an ambitious individual who’s at a very early stage in his career. When things didn’t work out with his first job, he refused to take on another he wasn’t passionate about. After going two months being unemployed and staying humble, he declined a handful of jobs until the right offers came around. Adam now works in two completely different industries that he’s always been passionate about, and is in the process of getting his own start-up company up and running…and he’s loving every minute of it.
Hello There is such a great way to differentiate yourself, you have to try it as explaining it here doesn’t do its justice. You need to think of getting your next job as preparing for battle. Don’t settle for that mediocre job just to have a job. Go after that job you really want and Hello There is a great way to get it.
Think of how many people do things the traditional way, sending in your resume and repeated cover letter. You’ll get lucky if it even gets looked at. You need to train yourself so you know, not think, but know, in order to get this job, you can’t be an ordinary applicant. You have to blow away the hiring manager by the way you present yourself. Think about it, if you are a hiring manager, compare a typical resume and maybe a cover letter, to a web site which contains short paragraphs about yourself, links to your resume, cover letter, a list of references, and all of your social media accounts, and the best thing, a video of yourself explaining how you would be a huge asset to the company. Which way of applying sounds better to you?
It’s been a while since I’ve written a post here and it is time for that to change. Unemployment numbers piss me off which is why I started this blog. I can’t stand seeing friends or family out of work. I ultimately believe that the end goal is in our own hands but sometimes we just don’t know where to look so that’s what this blog is all about.
To kick off the year right, I’m thrilled to share with you a new ebook launching today from a good friend Heather Huhman who is the Founder & President of Come Recommended. She basically rocks the career world with solid advice for the changing world of job searching and this ebook is no exception.
Let me warn you though, if you take to heart and do all the awesomeness in this ebook, you’d better get your ass in gear because it ain’t gonna be easy. If you do it though I’ll promise you that it will be worth it. The world is changing though and if you don’t get your ass in gear and care about your online presence then you will find yourself in the dust. My favorite quote from the book was,
70% of employers say they have turned down applicants by what they found online.
This should be obvious though. Everybody is creeping on people’s Facebook profiles these days so why would you think an employer would be any different. Be online who you are offline and you should be fine.
You can read the ebook in the slideshow I’ve included below or download it here. Anyone looking to get the job search rolling has found the right place to start. Congratulations to Heather for launching the ebook and thanks for the shout on my new startup, Say Hello There. (If you want early access to Hello There just shoot me an email at shane@shanemac.me)
Here’s the ebook. I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
Tweet tweet, LinkedIn, Email… blah blah blah blah… Nowadays, we should all listen to Mark Twain;
When you find yourself on the side of the majority it is time to pause and reflect.
Seriously, it seems like all of the companies are on Twitter, talking on Facebook and connecting on LinkedIn. Everyone is doing it. If you are not doing it then you are way behind. Well, if you are not on any of these networks then you may be screwed but seriously, if you only use these networks then realize you look like everyone else.
And here we go… Back to the 309-453-8175. (My Cell Phone… Call me, love to chat
We have all heard some crazy job search stories – whether it is the guy on Wall Street with a sandwich board or a woman who found her dream job but the story below is not only clever, it is pretty brilliant. Basically, Brownstein, the job searcher, bought Google Adwords for names of the executives who worked at the companies that he wanted to work for. When the executives (like so many of us do) Googled themselves they would see a clever little ad at the top of the page saying “Gooogling yourself is fun isn’t it? Hiring me is fun too!” That simple ad resulted in interviews and 2 job offers from the 5 companies he targeted. Total cost was $6. Honestly, just watch the video and see for yourself and if I were you I would start buying some ads. Remember, most people won’t know about this so why not try it for yourself?

This is a guest post from Virgilia and Danielle who are working on an awesome new project called GenJuice.
One of the most misunderstood notions that will keep you from seeing success as a future entrepreneur is the belief that you need to have an idea before leaving your corporate job and pursuing your passions. However, the truth is you really don’t know what you’re looking for until you’ve gone out, evaluated different possibilities and chatted with both new and tenured entrepreneurs.
We’ve organized meetups and events meant to help young people do this very thing. Below are four ways we’ve seen people who attend GenJuice events become entrepreneurs without having their own business idea first.
This post was influenced by an early morning call from a friend of mine Sara Davidson. She rocks. Read her blog here.

After 20 some years of thinking I needed mentors to tell me where to go I find myself wondering if those same mentors actually mute many other people’s dreams before they ever get started or even try. After reading Jun Loayza and Ryan Paugh’s posts about mentors I decided to share with you the comment I left on Jun’s blog. Here is my comment and after that go read his post.

Right now you need to go sign up for Gist. http://www.gist.com. If you don’t know where to start then make sure you reach out to the gist team or sign up for an upcoming webinar and learn how to use the tool better. It is business, careers, and life wrapped inside of a super powerful and IMHO bad ass tool that I think can help anyone do better business or find better careers.
Remember that Gist doesn’t replace Twitter, Facebook, Google Buzz, and other social tools, Gist makes them all better and worthwhile. Gist is how you say hello while twitter is just the doorway. It is what you say when you walk through it that matters. Relationships are life and is what Mr. Gary Vee is trying to let everyone know.
Here are the people at Gist who you may want to follow.
